Microsoft's Mac Business Unit has just pushed out a new version of Messenger for Mac, Microsoft's Mac IM client. Messenger for Mac 7 brings support for OS X's Bonjour, a new contact search tool and some much-requested audio-visual chat features.
Unfortunately, the A/V support is limited to users in corporate environments, since the new features require Office Communications Server 2007 to work. The Mac BU team says that A/V support for the rest of us is in the works.
Video chat in Messenger has been available for quite a while if you're on Windows, and of course it's also in Apple's iChat, so long as you and your friends use AOL. But Mac users looking for video chats with buddies on the MSN/Windows Live network are still out of luck — unless you're running Communications Server.
After taking Messenger for Mac 7 for a spin this morning, I can say that it's stable and the new search features work well. But I can't help wondering why I would ever switch from Adium to a client that doesn't support all the chat networks. Still, for those Mac users who only need to be on MSN/Windows Live or Yahoo, Messenger for Mac 7 should be good news.
You can grab a copy of Messenger for Mac 7 from the Microsoft Mac Download site.
